Smoking, obesity ‘grow as world threat’

October 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

kidsTobacco and obesity are overtaking hunger and infectious disease as leading causes of death and illness across the developing world, an Australian expert has warned.

As globalisation had lifted millions of people out of poverty, Dr Paul Kowal said free trade agreements had allowed the rapid movement of processed food and tobacco products into the world’s poorest nations.

Many developing countries now faced new and mounting health threats from the expanding availability of fast food, soft drinks and cigarettes, he said.

“To increase development in a country, they are forced to open up to transnational corporations including tobacco corporations,” Dr Kowal said of the trend emerging in the world’s developing nations.

“And there is a clear correlation between the local presence of a tobacco company and increasing tobacco uptake.”

Dr Kowal holds a position on a research committee within the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is also a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle.

He spoke to AAP on Tuesday after he addressed the International Conference on Realising the Rights to Health and Development for All underway in Hanoi in Vietnam.  Dr Kowal pointed to WHO estimates that, if trends continue, there will be more than eight million tobacco-related deaths a year by 2030, 80 per cent of them in the developing world.

In 2000, the number of overweight and obese adults in the world exceeded the number of underweight for the first time.

Dr Kowal said Indonesia was a classic example of a developing country that had levels of smoking and obesity “increasing as the gross national income per capita increased” while India, China and many South-East Asian countries were on a similar path.

He said tobacco companies were known to tailor their marketing efforts in developing countries to try to reach those in the population that had not traditionally smoked – women.

They also worked to sidestep advertising bans through the sponsorship of sporting teams or by selling cigarettes “by the stick”.

Vietnam, which has one of the world’s highest rates of smokers at 56 per cent of men and two per cent of women, has moved to ban smoking in indoor public places from January next year.

Another speaker told the conference that Vietnam spent about $US77.5 million ($A84.47 million) each year on health care to treat tobacco-related diseases such as lung cancer and heart disease.

“Smoking kills, that’s pretty clear, and it has overtaken infectious disease in a lot of lower-income countries yet there is still a misconception there that infectious disease is rampant,” Dr Kowal said.

“In fact, we’re seeing a double burden of disease – non-communicable disease from risk factors like induced poor eating habits or smoking uptake is becoming a bigger and bigger problem.”

Health experts at the conference are calling on governments to increase tobacco taxes, ban tobacco advertising, improve education about tobacco-related diseases, adopt global and legally-binding codes, and limit market access to transnational corporations.

Living Years helps in the fight against drowning

October 1, 2009 · 2 Comments

NDPAMD LogoOn Saturday, October 3rd, more than 200 people who have been affected by a drowning related accident from around the country will join Hannah’s Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting drowning awareness, at a special memorial service and national day function in Brisbane to remember those they have lost.

“Hannah’s Foundation started after we lost our own daughter, Hannah, to a drowning in our backyard pool,” explained founder Katherine Plint. “We had recently purchased our house, and when she drowned, we actually found out that pool was not compliant and was also illegally built. We had nowhere to turn to in Australia as a support group, so we decided, as Australians, that we would start our own.”

Patron of Hannah’s Foundation, QLD Police Commissioner, Mr Bob Atkinson APM and founders Andrew and Katherine Plint along with other families will be present at the memorial service and national day function to launch a new inspirational independent film titled Swim Across Australia produced by Suzannah Cowley and follows the story of Mark Gubyani, who tragically lost his daughter Kaitlin to drowning.

Katherine Plint’s greatest hope for Hannah’s Foundation is that it will give a powerful voice to drowning prevention. “… [Drowning] doesn’t discriminate, [regardless of] race, size, vocation, status in society. Hannah’s Foundation is currently advocating the Queensland State Government to overhaul their pool legislation. It’s one of the largest overhauls in this country in the last 20 years. Whilst that is done, we will then start on all of the other states. We’re also working with other charities internationally, and we’re also in the process of helping three other families worldwide: one in South Africa, one in Canada, and one in Ireland to set up a foundation in their children’s names to advocate drowning prevention in that country as well.”

In conjunction with the Plint family, Living Years has provided a Living Years Lifebook for little Hannah, creating a space her siblings, family and friends can visit, share memories, see photographs and view videos of their beloved Hannah. The Lifebook has also been set up so that donations can be made directly to Hannah’s Foundation in her memory to help raise awareness of drowning prevention. In an effort to raise much-needed funds for their valuable continuing work, $10 from every Lifebook purchased will be donated to the foundation.

Living Year’s very own Kate vanderVoort will be present at the memorial service where she will share Hannah’s online memorial with the 200 people in attendance – Kate will also discuss how Living Years Lifebook pages can create a meaningful, memorable and long lasting tribute to celebrate the life of a loved one.

In addition to the Brisbane memorial, a collection of families associated with Hannah’s Foundation from around the world including the United States, Canada and South Africa are expected to release purple, pink and blue balloons in memory of those who have drowned. Meanwhile in Australia balloons will be released in every state.

To purchase tickets to the memorial service please email Hannah’s Foundation on support@hannahsfoundation.org.au and register your interest.

Loss and grief workshops for farmers

September 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Petrea KingA good friend of Living Years, Petrea King of the Quest for Life Foundation and author of Your Life Matters, will hold a number of workshops on Loss and Grief across north and north-western Victoria.  Here she will demonstrate that no matter what’s happening, health and happiness is possible.

She’s done similar workshops on health and happiness in western NSW, where she’s seen men in farming especially struggle because they see the inability to earn an income as a personal failing. “They’re taking climate change personally,” she says. “It’s not really until people get to that place of saying ‘this has happened and what are we going to do about it’ that they can move on.”

She says often this happens when we face the big Ds in life – disaster, despair, drought, debt, disability, divorce, disappointment, diagnosis and domestic violence. She says destructive self-doubt can be countered by the Four Cs or the “keys to peace”.

Health and Happiness workshops, organised by Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Services, will be held in Kyneton on Oct 5, Echuca on Oct 8, Bendigo on Oct 9-10, Kerang on Oct 14, Swan Hill on Oct 16 and Mildura on Oct 18-19.  To book or find out more phone 0413 057 879.

Australia’s Largest Charities Forge an Alliance with Living Years

September 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Some of Australia’s largest charities forge an alliance with Living Years including the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, The Australian Lung Foundation, The Smith Family and Hannah’s Foundation.

In creating a Lifebook, people can choose a charity to donate to in memory of their loved one. Whilst any charity can be listed to receive donations, Living Years is taking this one step further and has formed an alliance with 12 charities to receive further donations.

Charities such as the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, the Smith Family, Hannah’s Foundation and The Australian Lung Foundation will receive a donation for each Lifebook that is created through their unique landing page.

We are thrilled to work closely with these charities in supporting their members and donors as well as donating back to the community and causes that matter to us all.

Living Years Starts Beta Testing

August 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s an exciting time at Living Years HQ. We’ve moved into beta testing mode, and with that we get to see some real life use of the site.

So we’d like to show a few of the Lifebooks that have popped up that give an idea of how fabulous a page can look.

One of the example pages we setup for Michael Jackson.

Barry, Living Years’ Marketing Director, setup one for his father, Harry Epstein.

I’ve also spent a short while setting up a Lifebook for my own Dad, and did so in only a few minutes. It’s really very simple.

We’d love people to drop by and have a look. Bear in mind that the site is still in beta, and as such there are some bugs. So unfortunately we can’t open it right up for everyone. However, you can have a look at the above links, and peruse a little of the site: beta.livingyears.com. When you do, please leave a comment on the weblog, send us a note on Twitter, or even our Facebook Group. We’d love to know your first thoughts!

The Living Years Blog

July 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi, and thanks for visiting the weblog for Living Years.

My name is Richard, and I’m the main author for the Living Years blog. My aim is to bring you news and information about memorialising loved ones. Over the coming months I’ll find news, information, and a collection of amazing people to chat to about celebrating friends and family that have passed away. That might sound a little sad to some, but my aim is to make it informative, interesting, and helpful.

So, why am I writing the blog? Well, Living Years hasn’t launched yet, but soon it’ll be the place to help memorialise our loved ones. This blog aims to be a companion site that will provide a bit of personality to those people behind the company, and also provide a place for us to reach out to the wider community.

While we find our feet in the blogosphere please make sure to say “Hi.” We’d love to hear any suggestions you might have for topics, questions, or people.

In the mean time, please join in the conversation with us on Twitter and our Facebook Group.
